About faith crises
Last weekend I was asked whether I had ever had a crisis of faith. This wasn’t the first time, but I had to ask for some room to define, to interpret the question. I will write about my chain of thought about that.
About faith: I want to remind that faith is not about absolute knowledge Read more…
Crisis, Choice and Commitment
So a theme I’ve been reading about lately is the crisis of faith phenomena in Mormon circles. It seems that there are endless numbers of people who 1) have been brought up in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church) by parents, who have taught the gospel at home and have strongly supported their childrens’ activity; 2) have also “found out” something they think is compromising Read more…
Exercising Faith, Revisited Again
So, it is time to write about it again. I actually read my previous Faith posts — some of which may be difficult to discern, because they don’t come right out and say, “this is about Faith!”
Well, now, this one does declare that.
This is part of my philosophical education, I guess Read more…
About Trying To Serve God And Mammon Or the Gospel of Wealth
Well, it’s Scripture quiz time. Question: According to Jesus, as recorded in Scriptures, is it possible to serve both God and Mammon? Answer Yes or No.
Answer: According to Matt 6:24 and Luke 16:13, “Ye cannot serve God and mammon.”
Yet, look around you. You’ll find people strongly equating wealth/health/success with righteousness, insinuating that such things automatically follow from righteous lives. But if we read the Sermon on the Mount (part of which is recorded in Matt 6, where the above quote can also be found), it is quite obvious that it is not just that we cannot serve God and mammon, we get several instructions Read more…
Does a Prophet Always Know Everything?
Lately I have pondered some issues relating to revelation, the privilege of having the Spirit communicate to us things that are sacred in nature, or at least able to help us in ways unseen at the moment.
I ran into the Mark Hofmann story again. If you read the linked Wikipedia story, you’ll learn that he forged documents which he was able to pass as real, Read more…
Are Faith And Doubt Always Mutually Exclusive?
First off, I want to say, that it is not my intention to be negative about what has been said about the subject.
We heard in the conference – again – that faith and doubt can not coexist in the same heart. I both agree and disagree, based on my personal experience and from reading the Scriptures and Church magazines and literature. Read more…
A Measure of Relief
This post has nothing to do with my other posts, this is just a personal indulgence.
I am no movie critic, but in my years I have watched a few, some many times over. Not so much in the last years for some reason – probably my long-lasting infatuation with computers, which is taking more and more of my time. But yesterday my daughter wanted to take me and her husband to see the latest Bond movie (it was Father’s Day here). Read more…
Graceful Faith, Willful Works
This post was first published at Nine Moons, where you can go and read comments and post your own.
My wife and I have 5 kids. Our daughter (one of them, not the one who has a 5-month-old son) is serving a mission in England now and despite being busy she writes faithfully enough. As she was growing up, we would have discussions around the dinner table during long dinners, family home evenings and any other time the family was together. We talked about everything. So it’s natural that she’s telling us about things.
